Causes of Brachial Palsy
Erb’s palsy is the most common of several disorders caused by damage to the brachial plexus. This is a group of nerves located at the top of the shoulder, near the neck. When they are damaged, communication between the brain and the arm is interrupted.
Erb’s palsy can be caused by accidents after birth, even in adulthood. However, it is usually a consequence of a birth injury. Some examples of birth conditions that could cause or contribute to Erb’s palsy include:
- The head being pulled away from the shoulders during birth
- The use of certain drugs to induce labor
- Prolonged or otherwise difficult births
Symptoms and Treatment of Erb’s Palsy
The symptoms shown in the affected arm can range from mild to severe, depending on the extent of nerve damage done. The affected arm may be:
- Smaller than the other arm
- Partially or fully paralyzed
- Turned inward, with the hand curled
Erb’s palsy sometimes resolves itself, but this can take up to 2 years or longer. In the meantime, parents need to do daily arm exercises with the infant to keep the arm muscles strong. Infants with serious damage may need surgery and treatment from specialists in this condition.
