10-year old needs 24 hour care after forceps-caused spinal cord injury

Posted on Tuesday, June 21st, 2011 at 7:11 pm

A 10-year old British boy with birth injuries was recently awarded compensation for his 24-hour care.  The amount of the settlement has not been released but is estimated to be in the millions of pounds.  The cost of round-the-clock care by a specialist can cost up to hundreds of thousands of dollars every year.

The boy suffered spinal cord damage and became paralyzed from the neck down after forceps were used in his delivery.  Furthermore, the forceps injury caused neurological damage which prevents him from breathing on his own.  He uses a ventilator at all hours of the day in order to be able to breath.

The family filed suit against the hospital where the boy was delivered in order to receive the compensation necessary to pay for his 24-hour care and other medical expenses.
