Forceps and birth injuries

A forceps is an object that is commonly used in vaginal birth deliveries when the baby is not progressing down the birth canal at the appropriate rate. A doctor can use this piece of equipment to slowly help the newborn emerge from the canal, among other reasons.
There are times when the misuse of this object can lead to numerous birth injuries. These injuries can include:
- Bruising on the baby’s face where the forceps were used
- Potential fracture of the baby’s collar bone
- Hemorrhaging of the brain
- Spinal problems
These complications can lead to potential problems for infants. It is important that mothers know the risks associated with this tool before they allow it to be used in their delivery.

Forceps suspected to be cause of newborn’s death

Investigators and coroners in Ireland believe forceps may have caused the death of a newborn in Dublin last year.
The baby was born at Harold’s Cross Hospital in Dublin by emergency C-section. Doctors involved in the child’s delivery called for a C-section after first attempting to use forceps.
The baby was born motionless and passed away a week later. Officials say the baby experienced a lack of oxygen to his brain causing a haemorrhage.
A coroner said that the use of forceps could have caused the brain trauma that led to the infant’s tragic death.
