Delivery and infant bone fractures

There are several things that can occur during a delivery that can lead to bone fractures in infants. The fact that infants have almost 100 more bones than adults alone means that babies have a greater chance of suffering a bone fracture.
Babies that are larger in size, are overdue, or are experiencing an extended delivery are more likely to suffer a bone fracture during the delivery. However, if a physician properly executes the delivery, this should not occur.
In addition, the use of forceps during a delivery could cause bone fractures if the instrument is squeezed too tightly.
If your child suffered a bone fracture during their delivery, it is possible that the injury could have been avoided if a doctor or hospital staff member had acted differently.
