Pregnancy Myths

Posted on August 31st, 2009 No Comments

When you become pregnant, old wives' tales begin circulating from every direction. While not all of the information you hear is accurate, some of it is. It is important to talk to your doctor about what you should and should not be doing.

Some examples of common pregnancy myths are very much untrue and can adversely affect your pregnancy if you listen to them. For instance, "you are eating for two", "you shouldn't eat seafood" and "you should not exercise during the last trimester" are very common and very wrong myths. You should consult your doctor about any of these myths that you hear to get expert medical advice.

Unfortunately, doctors can sometimes make poor judgement calls. If you have been the victim of a birth injury, contact the Philadelphia birth injury lawyers of Lowenthal & Abrams at 215-329-3511.

Proper Pregnancy Care

When you are receiving medical care while pregnant, it is important to know that you can trust your health care providers. This extends not only to your Ob/Gyn, but to the nursing staff and anyone else who is working with you.

Unfortunately, a small mistake can lead to a huge problem. Something as simple as being given the wrong pill or misreading a chart can mean terrible, and possibly life long, consequences for your child.

If you or someone you know has been the victim of a birth injury, contact the Philadelphia birth injury lawyers of Lowenthal & Abrams at 215-329-3511.

Florida Hospital Causes Accidental Abortions

Posted on August 24th, 2009 No Comments

At St Mary's Medical Center in West Palm Beach, two pregnant women were administered the wrong medications in August of last year., causing one to abort her unborn twins and the other to give premature birth.

Doctors had ordered progesterone suppositories to prevent premature labor, but the hospital staff mistakenly administered Prostin, a drug used to induce labor and expel miscarried fetuses. One of the women, only five and a half months pregnant, birthed her child into a commode because nurses told her she needed to have a bowel movement.

Inducing Birth Not Necessarily Dangerous

Posted on August 19th, 2009 No Comments

For a long time, people have believed that inducing birth leads to complications in delivery. However, researchers at UC San Francisco and Stanford University have found that this is not necessarily the case.

The researchers looked at studies of labor induction in women who were in late pregnancy. Most of the women were about a week past their due dates. They found that inducing labor reduced the rate of cesarian section by 20% and the presence of meconium in amniotic fluid by 50%.

Woman to Give Birth to 12 Babies

Posted on August 17th, 2009 No Comments

A Tunisian woman is 9 months pregnant and ready to give birth to 12 babies, 6 boys and 6 girls. She is reportedly healthy and if all the babies survive, it will be a record in multiple births.

When multiple births occur, the potential for complication increases greatly. The more children involved, the greater the risk. Because of this, it is important that doctors monitor the situation closely.

Epilepsy and Pregnancy

Between 2001 and 2003, researchers in Taiwan studied 1,016 pregnant women with epilepsy and compared them to a control group of 8,128 healthy pregnant women. Of the women with epilepsy, 503 had seizures during pregnancy.

The researchers found that women who suffered seizures had 1.36 times the risk of low birth weight, 1.63 times the risk of premature birth and 1.37 times the risk of having a low birth weight baby as compared to the control group. Epilectic women with no seizures did not seem affected.

In women with epilepsy, doctors should monitor for adverse affects. If you or someone you know has suffered a birth injury, contact the Philadelphia birth injury lawyers of Lowenthal & Abrams at 215-329-3511.

How Birth Injuries Happen

Posted on August 10th, 2009 No Comments

Birth injuries are almost always avoidable. Generally, the action or inaction of a health care provider leads to the injury occurring. Unfortunately, the injury stems from negligence most of the time.

A doctor may miss an important piece of information or may do something that he or she knows carries high risk. Under these or other similar circumstances, your health care provider is acting negligently.
