Early Pregnancy Problems Lead to Later Issues

Posted on June 29th, 2009 No Comments

A recent study has shown that problems early on in pregnancy can lead to more problems later on. The study of 75 cases linked first trimester pregnancy problems to premature birth  and low birth weight in current and future pregnancies.

Expecting mothers who experience these first trimester problems should be monitored closely for the rest of the pregnancy and in future pregnancies to avoid serious complications.

Chemicals from plastics have been linked to developmental problems in children for some time. However, a new study has shown a link between in utero exposure and low birth weight.

The study examined 201 infants and mothers. The researchers found high levels of phthalates in the cord blood of many infants who were born at low weights.

Vaginal Birth for Breech Babies

Posted on June 22nd, 2009 1 Comment

Cesarian section has been the go to method of delivery for breech babies for years. However, studies have shown that 70% of breech babies can be safely delivered vaginally, significantly cutting down on the need for surgery.

In any cesarian section, there is a chance of bleeding problems and infection if anything goes wrong. This makes vaginal delivery safer whenever it can be done. Because of this, Canada will have all of its doctors properly trained for vaginal deliveries in breech.

Birth Injuries on the Decline

Posted on June 17th, 2009 No Comments

A study by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality showed the the number of birth injuries in the US declined from 2000 to 2006. The numbers indicated a 30% decrease in injuries to mothers during vaginal delivery without delivery instruments and a 20% decrease in cesareans and deliveries using instruments.

Even so, there were 158,000 preventable injuries that in 2006 affecting mothers and infants. While the sharp decrease in birth injuries is a step in the right direction, it is important that hospitals and medical staffs continue working to eliminate preventable birth injuries.

Infections in Labor

Posted on June 10th, 2009 1 Comment

When a woman goes into labor, it is important that the room and all the equipment used in delivery be sterile. If this is not the case, there is a risk of infection to both the mother and the infant.

One very common infection in this situation is caused by bacterial meningitis. If the infant is exposed, it could be incredibly dangerous and even life threatening at such an early stage in life. It also puts the mother in danger.

Meningitis in Pregnancy

Nearly a year ago, a British woman was hospitalized while 8 and a half months pregnant after contracting meningitis. She was too weak to deliver or undergo C Section at the time, but miraculously survived. Her daughter was also born healthy last June.

Unfortunately, the woman's experience is not the norm. Meningitis is rare in pregnant women and may not be properly diagnosed right away. In addition, it took round the clock care among many other things for this woman to recover. Although they should, not all hosptials give that sort of treatment.

Forcep Injury

Posted on June 5th, 2009 No Comments

During birth, it can often be difficult to push out the infant. When a mother cannot do it on her own, the doctor will generally pull the infant out with a vacuum or forceps.

This procedure is meant to keep the birth from becoming dangerous. However, if the doctor is not careful the forceps can cause permanant injury to the child.

The family of a 9 year old boy who has cerebral palsy was recently awarded $3,991,000 in a lawsuit against the doctors at the boy's delivery. The boy's fetal heart rate was not properly monitored when the mother was hospitalized.

She was admitted to the emergency room at Frederick Memorial Hospital in May 2000. The fetal heart rate was checked when she arrived and was ignored for the next 3 hours. An emergency C Section was performed when the heart rate was found to be dangerously low, and the boy was born with cerebral palsy.
