Good Hospitals and Birth Injuries

Posted on May 27th, 2009 1 Comment

Even the best of hospitals can make mistakes. Unfortunately that was the case with a now seven year old boy who was born severe brain damage and physical disabilities at BC Women's Hospital in British Columbia, Canada.

The hospital has an excellent reputation and is generally more than adequate in providing health care to their patients. However, in this case, the hospital, three doctors and a nurse were found negligent by a jury and the boy and his family were awarded $4 million Canadian.

IVF Twins at Higher Risk

Posted on May 22nd, 2009 No Comments

A study conducted by British and Australian scientists between 1994 and 2000 has shown an increased risk of birth complications with In Vitro twins. While all multiple births are more dangerous than singles, those attributed to In Vitro Fertilization were found to be more so.

The study compared IVF births to those of fraternal twins of the opposite sex. It showed that the IVF twins were more than twice as likely to experience adverse outcomes like premature birth, low birthweight and death.

Giving Birth at 66

Posted on May 20th, 2009 1 Comment

A 66 year old UK woman is pregnant and plans to give birth next month at a clinic in Cambridge. The woman is a divorcee who currently has no children. She received her IVF treatment in the Ukraine. British clinics will not perform the treatment for women over the age of 50.

If there are no complications with the birth, the woman will be nearly 80 when her child becomes a teenager. This has led medical professionals to question the pregnancy. Not only is the fetus at risk for birth injury and complications, it is also at risk of losing its mother at an early age and being exposed to psychological trauma.

2 Mothers Die of Same Infection after Delivery

Two women in the UK delivered their babies on the same day at the same hospital. Soon after delivery, they both developed and died from the same infections. Both women died of streptococcus A.

The incidence of these deaths brings up issues about the hospital's hygiene. Fortunately, both infants survived. However, this situation could just as easily affect the babies as their mothers if it is not taken care of.

Exposure to Flame Retardant May Increase Risk of Male Genital Problems

Posted on May 15th, 2009 1 Comment

Nearly four decades ago, a group of women were exposed to a flame retardant called PBBs through meat that was contaminated. Those women have been followed since their exposure in the early 1970s.

Since that time, 393 boys have been born to the women. In a study of both the mothers and the sons, researchers found that women who had higher blood concentrations of PBBs had sons with a much higher risk of genital defects. However, more study may be required on the subject.

Folic Acid Linked to Reduced Chance of Premature Birth

Posted on May 13th, 2009 No Comments

A recent study has found that taking folic acid supplements for at least one year before conception can reduce the risk of premature birth. About 12% of births in the US occur before the 37 week mark, causing difficulties for the infant.

The study showed a 70% reduction in preterm birth between 20 and 28 weeks and a 50% reduction between 28 and 32 week. However, the study also said that taking folic acid for less than one year befor conception had no effect on the pregnancy.

If you have had to deal with a preterm birth that should not have occurred, contact the Philadelphia birth injury attorneys of Lowenthal & Abrams at 215-329-3511.

Vacuum Injuries

Birth can be a difficult time. In some births, pushing is not enough, and doctors have to pull the infant through the birth canal. In some of these cases, injury can occur from the tools used in the process.

Vacuums are a common tool in these instances, and can lead to scalp bruising and lacerations as well as nerve damage among other things. Often, these injuries can lead to lifelong problems.

Man Allowed to Sue for Cerebral Palsy

Posted on May 8th, 2009 No Comments

An English man who has suffered from cerebral palsy all his life has won the right to sue the hospital that may be responsible for his condition. When the case came up, the London Strategic Health Authority claimed that it was outside the legal time limit.

The High Court has ruled that since the man did not receive information about the cause of his cerebral palsy until he was 31, he would be allowed to sue. The man is now in a wheelchair and communicates with the help of a computer.
