1-Year-Old Fighting Erbs Palsy

Posted on February 24th, 2009 1 Comment

Kennady Thornton is 1 year old, and has been undergoing physical therapy since she was only 8 days old.

Kennady has a condition known as Brachial Plexus Palsy (BPP), which occurred during her birth.  BPP is a form of Erbs Palsy, and it controls the nerves that send signals to the shoulder, arms and hands.   In Kennady's case, the nerves in her neck are damaged, making her unable to move her right arm.  The therapy is expected to correct her condition, however, many children who have suffered this injury during birth have lifelong damages.

What some do not know, however, is that this condition is preventable.

There are things doctors can do to prevent these happenings.

If you or a loved one has been through a birth injury, please contact your Philadelphia Birth injury lawyer at Lowenthal & Abrams at 215-329-3511 for more information.

$4.4 Million in Birth Injury Case

Posted on February 16th, 2009 No Comments

A jury has awarded $4.4 million in a birth injury case that took place in York County, South Carolina. This has been awarded because an infant was born with a brain injury that could have been prevented.

A nurse trainee misread data that showed the fetus' distress, allowing it to be born with cerebral palsy. The infant was born Nov. 18, 2003 and died on Feb. 13, 2008 from complications of the cerebral palsy.

Birth injuries can last a lifetime, and sometimes can set the lifetime. If you or someone you know has had to deal with birth injuries, contact the Philadelphia birth injury attorneys of Lowenthal & Abrams at 215-329-3511.

Multiple Births Can Lead to Injury

Posted on February 9th, 2009 No Comments

With all the news of the octuplets birth, it is important to look into the medical side of the birth. When fetuses have to share a womb, they have to share everything including nutrients, and space.

Because there is a limit to what a mother can ingest, having more children at the same time increases the likelihood that they will be born with medical defects or injuries. For this reason, it is incredibly important that doctors monitor the birth at every stage.

Without proper care, infants can be subjected to life long injuries. If you or someone you know has had to suffer through birth injuries, contact the Philadelphia birth injury attorneys of Lowenthal & Abrams, PC at 215-329-3511.

Medical Board Revokes License of Doctor in Botched Abortion Case

Posted on February 6th, 2009 1 Comment

A Florida Medical Board agency has revoked the license of a doctor who is at the center of a controversial case involving the death of a baby born at an abortion clinic.

The medical board found Dr. Pierre Jean-Jacque Renelique guilty of medical malpractice, as well as having unlicensed individuals conducting procedures that should have been done by licensed medical professionals.

This case stems from when a woman  gave birth while in an abortion clinic.  According to allegations,  the baby was born and breathing.  The doctor allegedly swept the baby in the trash, and did not tye the umbilical cord.  The umbilical cord not being tyed resulted in the baby bleeding to death in the trash bag.  The remains of the baby were recovered after an investigation was started into the case.

$5 Million Given to Group to Study Birth Defects

Birth defects may be more understood in the next few years,  after a large grant has been awarded to further the study of the field.  The University of Utah and the Utah Health Department have been given over $5 million dollars to study birth defects.

The grant was given by the United States Center for Disease Control and Prevention to promote research of the topic.  The groups conducting the research will receive around $1 million dollars per year for the next five years to conduct their study and research of birth defects.

One of the main focuses of the research from the groups will be to study the link of the  environment and genetics in birth effects occurring.

Cats Don’t Kill Babies

Posted on February 5th, 2009 No Comments

The old wives tale that cats are dangerous to have around newborns has been debunked. However there are still those who will hold to the old idea. In fact, recently, Dr. T. Berry Brazelton wrote an article backing the idea.

Fortunately for cat lovers, and any other person, having a cat around the house will not necessarily be a danger to your infant. Instead of worrying about old wives tales, perhaps more important things should be focused on.
