Neonatal Tetanus Infections
Many people associate the spread of tetanus with a puncture injury such as stepping on a rusty nail. However, the bacteria that cause tetanus can live anywhere, including soil and on improperly cleaned surgical tools. Thus, even newborns still in the hospital are susceptible to neonatal tetanus infections.
When doctors cut the umbilical cord, the wound is open for deadly, tetanus-causing bacteria. If your doctor has improperly maintained your baby’s umbilical cord wound or other injury, resulting in a neonatal tetanus infection, contact the Philadelphia birth injury lawyers from the trusted firm of Lowenthal & Abrams, P.C., today at 215-238-1130.
Symptoms of Neonatal Tetanus
Tetanus is caused by bacteria called Clostridium tetani, which produce a powerful neurotoxin that interferes with the nerves that control muscles. This toxin causes muscles to become tense and rigid, which explains some of the symptoms of tetanus.
In neonatal tetanus, parents or caregivers may notice the following signs:
- Irritability
- Difficulty swallowing
- Inability to suck
- Muscle spasms
- Rigid muscle position, such as an arched back
Thankfully, tetanus is fairly easily treated after it is recognized. It requires antibiotics to kill the bacteria, as well as supportive measures such as muscle relaxants and, in some cases, ventilators.

Sadly, babies are unable to tell us when they are hurting, which can delay medical help.
