Miscarriage
Most people are overjoyed at the news that they are pregnant. Sadly, though, the March of Dimes estimates that 50% of all pregnancies end in miscarriages. While most of these occur before a woman even knows that she has conceived a child, 15% of recognized pregnancies end in miscarriages, with some of them being tragic late term miscarriages.
Signs of Miscarriage
Also called spontaneous abortions, miscarriages are like abnormal menstrual cycles that can result in the expulsion of the fetus. Signs of a spontaneous abortion can include:
- Bleeding that can become very heavy
- Cramps
- Abdominal pain
- Back pain
- Fever
- Vomiting
Cause of Spontaneous Abortion
Early miscarriages are typically a result of chromosomal abnormalities within the child, rather than the health of the mother. However, most other causes of spontaneous abortions are due to sometimes previously unrecognized problems with the mother. These can include:
- Uterine or cervical abnormalities
- Kidney disease
- Congenital heart disease
- Immune system disorders
- Thyroid problems
- Untreated diabetes
During the pregnancy, a mother is at an elevated risk for several things that can lead to a miscarriage. These external factors can include:
- Infections
- Exposure to radiation or toxic chemicals
- Unmonitored medications
- Usage of illegal drugs
- Smoking
- Drinking alcohol
- Injury
