Choosing an OB/GYN
Even before you become pregnant or plan for a baby, you will probably visit an OB/GYN for your regular feminine checkups. Typically, your gynecologist is also an obstetrician, whom you will use to help with your baby once you do become pregnant. It is important to choose a gynecologist who you can trust both now and in the future.
Steps to Picking Your Doctor
Here are some things to consider when you are searching for your doctor:
Listen to your friends and family. Usually, you can get recommendations for an obstetrician from those close to you. It is much easier to have a reference point, rather than cold-calling the first OB/GYN’s number that you see.
Look at the credentials. Make sure your doctor is well-qualified to care for you during this important time. Not only should your doctor have graduated from medical school and completed a residency, he or she should also be certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Examine the office. It can be a good idea to look around the doctor’s office to see if it is neat and clean. Also, ask your potential doctor about the equipment used in the office to make sure that it is up-to-date technology.
Ask questions. Your doctor should welcome your questions and possibly an interview. It is important that you feel comfortable around the doctor’s medical support staff as well.
Talk about the birth. You may want to double-check with your doctor to see if your ideas about birth coincide. If you are adamant about having a natural birth, make sure your obstetrician is open to that idea as well.

If your chosen obstetrician does not perform as you expected, tragic accidents such as birth injuries can occur.
